Gun Show Question

I went to the Houston Gun Collectors show yesterday. As always, awesome. So many guns I was actually sick was looking at them and had to force myself down the last few isles.

However, I have a questions. What is the deal with prices as the shows for ammunition? I could drive to the Academy less than 2 miles away and purchase ammo for MUCH less than at the show.

For example, I just purchased a years supply of brass cased Monarch (rebranded S&B) 9mm at Academy for $8/box. At the show, you could not purchase steel cased wolf for less than $12/box. The cheapest brass cases I saw was about $15/box. Other calibers are the same. However, people were lined up at these prices.

Obscure calibers I understand, but 9mm, 30-06, 270, 40 etc? What is the deal?

I think most of the monarch is actually privi.

But yeah, I stopped worrying about the gun shows and just started buying from academy. The houston gun show is almost a farce these days. High prices, and crowded.

It is really only good for getting your hands on stuff to see whether or not you like it.

Re: Gun Show Question

Because of the panic buying since Nov. of '08 there is a LOT of price gouging going on with ammo (thanks a crap load, Barack:biggrin: ). It's starting to calm down now and supply is catching up with demand. However, as you have seen, gunshow dealers are always looking for sucker ; try making a bulk purchase offer to them, say you'll pay them $x in cash for x# of boxes. If your offer is reasonable they'll probably take it - especially if they see the cash in your hand.

I stand corrected. It is privi, not S&B.

I went to my first ever gun show yesterday and noticed the same exact thing. I saw 50 rounds of Winchester White Box .40 S&W for over $30! It was outrageous. There were a lot of very interesting people there as well, on top of the crazy prices for ammunition. Overall, it was a good experience.

Re: Gun Show Question

Same is happening to the shows in NM. High prices on everything, but they aren't sellin much. They'll figure out soon that cheaper ammo has become available.

Guns are a different story here though. They've always been higher at the shows since there is no paperwork involved. In fact no paper unless you buy from FFL.

I buy cheaper private one on one or I use FFL since I know they still don't know if or what I bought unless they actually come and look at the FFL's papers (the archives are huge) and even though they may do that once in a while, they look more for his discrepancies unless they are looking for a particular individual or gun. It still doesn't get registered in the state IOW.

Re: Gun Show Question

Not always. I think Georgia Arms only does shows a state or two away but I've bought from them at gun shows for decades at prices much better than otherwise available for equivalent products. They bring a large selection of reloading stuff too. I've gone to several shows, paid the $5, walked directly to the Ga Arms table for what I wanted and left.

You can look at only so many overpriced black rifles, SKS's and the like before boredom sets in.

Re: Gun Show Question

I stopped going to gunshows about 3 years ago. Overpriced stuff everywhere, like at least 10%. Once I tried to haggle on an SKS sight adjustment tool to what I could get it over the internet for, and they would not come down the few bucks. So, I got it off ebay.

Maybe you could find a deal somewhere in there. I used to pay $5-$10 to get into these things, but would rather pay the shipping costs to just mail order ammo. Gun shows are fun to visit, but not a place to buy...

Re: Gun Show Question

Sellers are pricing ammo high probably because THEY bought it high. If you want the better prices, buy it online. NONE of it is particularly cheap anymore though, especially hollow point pistol, even from ammo "wholesalers".

Here in FL there was a show recently ,,,,pretty laid back parking lot was full to capacity Guys & Gals selling on the floor not through vendors met an old friend who had an ar never used still in the box for 2,000 and an 1850 long gun .22 I am not much for guns but I WILL GO TO THE SHOWS FOR SOMETHING TO DO typo and excuse the spelling and puntuation I'm tired and my back is hurting
ammo prices were a little steep but the variety extensive ,,
all I did get were homemade elk jerkey that was excelent but at a dollar a stick I limited myself to thirty

Re: Gun Show Question

As long as there are people who are willing to PAY the high prices for ammo or guns, there will be people who are willing to SELL ammo and guns AT high prices.

Once they stop selling them at said 'high prices', the price will come down. OR they will go out of business.

Don'tcha just love capitalism?

Re: Gun Show Question

I love gun shows. Its real simple: don't buy over priced things.
There are plenty things there that you are not going to find any other place.
We went to one a few weeks ago and saw lot of good deals on guns.
I didn't buy any ammo because I did not have to... well, one box of Gold Dot .38+p's for the wife's new S&W 642. We got the 642 for $429. and its NEW and without the internal lock. I'm not seeing anything near that price in gun shops around here.
I recently bought some Gortex camo pants for $20.
I got a 32 oz. "Kook" for spot. (unfortunately spot seems to have slipped and fallen since then)
I like to look at books and if there is something I just can't put down I'll buy it....otherwise I get it on Amazon for a fraction of the cover price.
I recently took a Luger that I bought to a show and several Luger sellers were more than happy to help me with identification value etc.

Has anyone else noticed a drop in gun prices overall in the last six months or so?

:sarc:Didn't you hear? They are passing a bill next week to ban .223 7.62 (or insert other round here). You need to get it. I should be selling it for $1 a round but I want to make sure people get some.

I got a decent price on a box of 38 gold dots.. I have not been able to find gold dots at the local gun shop so that's why I bought at the show..The local guy has been waiting on 38 gold dots for a month now..

I've been holding off purchasing some uppers in anticipation of this price bust. If we get an extended "risk-off" cycle in the markets, prices could fall precipitously. Since these would be discretionary purchases I am willing to hold off and bet on lower prices coming.

Edit: Welcome Avalon to the regime of gun nuts who watch ammo prices in anticipation of their next trip to the range!

thank you :) I discovered quite quickly how expensive those trips to the range can be. Especially when I take my Daughter and her boyfriend. That's one reason I bought the Jericho 9 mm. I can find cheap ammo at walmart for it. BTW, I only shot five rounds of those gold dots in the SW 38 revolver to get the feel of them.. They kicked my butt..

Avalon, do you have trouble charging the Jericho? The women in my family do not seem to be strong enough to pull the slide back to load a round. Is the Jericho easier than, say, a Browning S&W or Colt?

It's a question I never really thought about until recently when two in my family couldn't do it.

That is crazy. I just bought a 100 round box like that - white box Winchester- at Walyworld for $29.00.

SB.. I sent you a PM.. Ill give a full review on the Jericho when the snow storm clears and I can shot it..I will need some instruction on it as I am used to revolvers and this is my first semi automatic. From what the guys I picked up the gun from told me you can put a hurting on your fingers if they get in the way when you use the decocker.. This is a heavy gun that is very well made..Yes the slide is hard to pull but the way the dual safety catches are positioned it gives you a really good way to get a strong grip to pull the slide back.. Ill let my 99 lb daughter see if he can work the slide and let you know. She did work it the day we shot if I recall..She doesn't have a lot of upper arm strength so if she can do anyone can.. BTW, she fell in love with the Jericho.. I think she will be motivated to work through any slide issues just because she wants to shot it so bad..

Re: Gun Show Question

Haha, you linked to Ammo to Go, who were set up at the HGCA show that started this thread. Same prices online and in the show.

Gunshows are just starting to get fun again. Prices are coming back to earth and a lot of the smaller vendors are starting to actually SELL product rather than hoard it, hoping to find a sucker.
